The Middle Atlantic Golf Association is one of the oldest amateur golf organizations in the country. It was founded in 1902 for the purpose of promoting the game of golf, upholding the traditions and spirit of the game, and providing competitions for its members. The member clubs, approximately 125, are located in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Delaware. Most of the member clubs are located in the Baltimore-Washington area. The MAGA also has a strong presence in the Richmond-Williamsburg corridor. The MAGA conducts all of their events at ‘scratch.’ That is, there are no net prizes. Handicaps are only used to determine eligibility and in some cases, for flighting purposes. Their Men’s Championship is their oldest event and is one of the oldest Men’s Amateur events in the country. Its list of past champions is a who’s who of great amateurs and noted professional golfers.
In addition to their own events, the MAGA conducts on behalf of the USGA several qualifiers each year. In the odd years, the MAGA conduct the sectional qualifier for the U. S. Open Championship, the U. S. Senior Open Championship, and the U. S. Senior Amateur. In the even years, the Maryland State Golf Association conducts the qualifier for the U. S. Senior Amateur. About every two out of three years, the sectional qualifier for the U. S. Open is conducted the day after the Kemper Open. On these occasions, we will have a field of about 160 players of which over half are PGA Tour players. This is one of the biggest and most important events we conduct.
